Chinese fintech giant Ant Group has unveiled Ling-1T, a trillion-parameter artificial intelligence model that the company says rivals the world’s most advanced systems in reasoning, coding, and mathematics.
What sets Ling-1T apart, however, is not only its size but its decision to be open source, allowing researchers and developers worldwide to download, test, and build upon it freely.
While global leaders such as OpenAI’s GPT-5 and Google’s Gemini 2.5 keep their systems behind paid APIs, Ant’s open approach signals a shift towards collaborative and transparent AI development.
Trillion-scale engineering
Ling-1T contains around one trillion parameters, with roughly 50 billion active at any one time. Parameters act as the neural settings that help the model learn from data and generate coherent responses.
Trained on more than 20 trillion tokens of data, the system can handle up to 128,000 characters of context, far exceeding most current models.
Ant Group claims Ling-1T performs at state-of-the-art levels in reasoning benchmarks, including the American Invitational Mathematics Examination, where it showed strong problem-solving accuracy while using fewer resources than rival models.
The company describes Ling-1T as a “non-thinking” model, meaning it focuses on efficient reasoning rather than agent-style decision making, which it reserves for its separate “thinking” model line known as Ring.
How open source changes the game
Ant Group’s decision to release Ling-1T openly stands in contrast to the closed ecosystems typical of Western AI providers.
Whereas GPT-5 and Gemini are accessible only through corporate interfaces, Ling-1T’s full model files are available on public platforms such as Hugging Face and ModelScope.
This openness allows academics, small developers, and enterprises to study the model’s workings or adapt it for their own use, potentially accelerating innovation across the AI community.
Ant says it views artificial general intelligence as a public good and hopes the release will foster shared progress, a stance that differs from the more commercial focus of many major tech companies.
Smarter code, sharper reasoning
The model introduces several new training techniques. Its Evolutionary Chain-of-Thought process helps it refine reasoning during training, improving efficiency without increasing cost.
A hybrid Syntax–Function–Aesthetics reward system teaches Ling-1T to produce code that is not only functional but visually elegant, a capability that helped it top an open-source benchmark called ArtifactsBench.
Underneath, it uses a Mixture of Experts system, a design that activates only the parts of the network relevant to each task, much like switching on specific circuits in a brain rather than using all of them at once. This improves both speed and energy efficiency.
A strategic signal from China
The release of Ling-1T highlights China’s growing ambition in frontier AI research despite limitations on access to advanced chips.
By focusing on software and algorithmic innovation rather than hardware, Ant Group joins a wave of Chinese technology firms, among them DeepSeek and Alibaba’s Qwen project, pursuing efficiency and openness as competitive advantages.
Analysts say the move could encourage more global collaboration, with open-source models serving as shared infrastructure for AI development.
