A new face, or rather, four-legged form, has joined the world of consumer technology. Chinese robotics company VBot has introduced Babo, an intelligent companion robot designed to live alongside humans as both helper and friend.
Unveiled ahead of the 2025 World Robot Conference in Beijing and showcased to curious crowds in Paris, Babo has already captured global attention. With its sleek, dog-like design, conversational ability and lifelike movements, it is being hailed as a glimpse into the future of home robotics – one that is emotional as well as functional.
From Tools to Companions
Unlike industrial robots that perform precise manufacturing tasks, Babo is built to connect with people. It can walk with family members, carry bags, record photos and videos, and even help keep an eye on elderly relatives or children. Using natural voice interaction, it understands spoken commands without the need for remotes or apps, allowing users to talk to it much like they would to a person or a pet.
Babo’s emotional intelligence is another key feature. It is equipped with facial expressions, sound effects and conversational memory, letting it recognise family members, remember preferences, and respond with warmth and personality. The goal, according to VBot, is to turn robotics from a novelty into a genuine companion that blends into everyday life.
Cutting-Edge Technology Under the Hood
Behind Babo’s charm lies serious engineering. VBot’s partnerships with industry leaders such as Hesai Technology and EVE Energy have given the robot a technological edge.
Hesai’s AI-powered LiDAR provides the robot with a detailed, 3D view of its surroundings – the robotic equivalent of eyesight. This allows Babo to detect obstacles, plan paths in real time, and safely navigate complex environments such as city streets or cluttered living rooms.
Meanwhile, EVE Energy has co-developed a high-density battery system for VBot’s robots. The latest design boasts over 600Wh of power, roughly 38% above industry standards, offering up to six hours of outdoor use on a single charge. A new generation of batteries is already in development, promising even longer endurance for day-long adventures.
A Market on the Move
The rise of emotionally engaging, mobile robots comes as interest in so-called “embodied intelligence” surges. According to Polaris Market Research, the global RoboDog market is expected to grow from $597 million in 2025 to $2.76 billion by 2034, with an annual growth rate of 18.5%.
In Paris, Babo’s debut drew excited crowds, many stopping to chat, film, or walk alongside the robot. The enthusiastic response suggests a growing appetite for technology that does more than automate chores – it interacts, empathises, and entertains.
Looking Ahead
With mass production expected by the end of 2025 and international sales planned for 2026, Babo may soon find its way into homes around the world.
As robotics companies race to make machines more human-centred, VBot’s Babo stands out as a step toward a future where robots are not just tools, but companions.
