Google has begun rolling out its most significant update yet to Android Auto, introducing its Gemini artificial intelligence system to car dashboards around the world. The upgrade replaces Google Assistant and promises more natural conversations, quicker tasks and a smoother experience for drivers. The company says the rollout has now started globally in more than 45 languages and will continue over the coming months.
A more conversational driving companion
Gemini aims to change how drivers interact with their cars by offering a truly conversational assistant. Rather than relying on set phrases, motorists can now speak naturally and ask more complex questions. Whether it is finding a restaurant along the route, asking for directions buried in an email or rehearsing for a meeting, Gemini can handle multi step requests and keep up a flowing conversation.
Google says drivers can start chatting by saying Hey Google, pressing the microphone button on the display or long pressing the steering wheel’s voice control. Once activated, Gemini operates hands free, helping drivers keep their eyes on the road.
Smarter navigation and local recommendations
One of the biggest improvements is the integration with Google Maps. Gemini can offer detailed insights based on reviews and common questions. Drivers might ask for somewhere with good parking, the best local tacos or whether a restaurant is dog friendly. Follow up questions are encouraged, allowing motorists to refine their search as they go. Google says these features are useful for discovering lesser known spots or making confident choices during a long journey.
Easier messaging and communication
Sending and managing messages while driving has also been reworked. Gemini can summarise incoming texts, craft replies and even translate messages into more than 40 languages. Drivers can chain instructions together, such as telling a friend they are running late, adding an ETA and including an emoji. If they want to adjust a message, they can simply correct it without starting over.
Learning and productivity on the go
Google has introduced a feature called Live mode, allowing drivers to hold a continuous conversation with Gemini. This could involve learning about a destination, brainstorming ideas or preparing for a presentation. The assistant can also access Gmail, Google Calendar, Tasks and Keep, helping drivers stay organised while keeping their hands on the wheel. For example, they can ask Gemini to find a hotel address buried in an email and begin navigating there immediately.
Music and entertainment made simple
Gemini can also create playlists tailored to mood, weather or occasion. Drivers can request upbeat road trip music lasting three hours, family friendly songs or tracks suitable for a rainy morning. The assistant works across popular streaming apps such as YouTube Music and Spotify.
When will the update arrive?
The rollout begins immediately for anyone already using the Gemini app on their Android phone. A notification will appear on the car’s display once available. The upgrade will arrive not only for Android Auto users but later this year for vehicles with Google built in.
Google says this is only the beginning, with plans to expand Gemini’s capabilities over time.
