Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, is exploring partnerships with rivals Google and OpenAI to boost the performance of its AI features, according to a report in The Information via Reuters.
Executives at the company’s newly created Meta Superintelligence Labs have reportedly discussed integrating Google’s Gemini model to power conversational responses in Meta AI, the chatbot that sits across its apps. Talks have also touched on using OpenAI’s models to support broader AI functionality on its social platforms.
Any agreement is expected to be a temporary measure, while Meta works to close the gap with its own large language model, Llama 5, which is still in development. The lab’s priority is to ensure Llama can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with competitors like OpenAI’s GPT series and Google’s Gemini.
Meta isn’t a stranger to outside help. Internally, staff are already able to use Anthropic models via a coding assistant tool. The company has also invested heavily in talent this year, bringing in former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman to co-lead its superintelligence push—backed by generous compensation packages designed to lure top researchers.
A spokesperson for Meta said the company is taking an “all-of-the-above approach”: building its own models, collaborating with external partners, and releasing open-source technology.
Neither Google, OpenAI, nor Microsoft—OpenAI’s biggest backer—have commented on the reported talks.
