Google has announced the rollout of Nano Banana, its latest AI-powered image editing model, to Google Photos. The update promises to make photo editing faster, more creative and more accessible, allowing users to transform their pictures simply by asking.
What is Nano Banana?
Nano Banana is a new image generation and editing model developed by Google DeepMind, part of the Gemini family of AI systems. First introduced earlier this year in the Gemini app, it has quickly gained attention for its ability to make realistic, targeted edits while preserving details such as facial likeness and lighting.
Now integrated into Google Photos, Nano Banana allows users to edit, create and explore their images using natural language commands. Whether you want to fix a smile, restyle a portrait or turn a photo into a painting, the AI handles it automatically.
Editing made simple
The main new feature is “Help me edit”, which lets users describe what they want changed in plain English or by voice. For example, you could say “remove the sunglasses”, “make Emma smile” or “turn this picture into a Renaissance painting”.
Google Photos will use its built-in face recognition to apply the requested edits accurately. The model draws on images in a user’s private face groups to ensure the changes look natural and stay true to the original subject.
The feature is already available on Android and is rolling out to iPhone users in the United States from 11 November 2025, alongside a redesigned editor with one-tap tools and gesture controls.
Creating with AI templates
A new section called “Create with AI” has also been added to the Photos app. It includes ready-made templates powered by Nano Banana that can generate images instantly. These templates allow users to create themed edits such as “Put me in a high fashion photoshoot” or “Create a winter holiday card” without having to type a prompt.
In the coming weeks, Google will launch personalised templates that adapt to each user’s hobbies and style, offering options like “Create a cartoon of me and my hobbies” or “Design a name doodle personalised to me.”
Ask Photos gets smarter
Alongside the editing tools, Google is expanding “Ask Photos”, a feature that helps users search their galleries using natural language. Instead of scrolling through thousands of pictures, users can simply ask for what they need, such as “Show me photos from our Paris trip” or “Find pictures of my dog at the beach.”
The tool is now available in over 100 countries and supports 17 new languages.
A new “Ask” button is also appearing directly on photos, enabling people to interact with individual images. You can ask questions about what’s in the photo, find related pictures or even request instant edits.
Available now
Most of these new AI-powered tools are rolling out from 11 November 2025 on the Google Photos app for Android and iOS. Users will need to update their app and ensure their Google account has Gemini features enabled.
With Nano Banana, Google is positioning Photos as more than just a storage platform. It is becoming an intelligent creative assistant, helping people rediscover and reimagine their memories with a few simple words.
